Gardening is one of the wonderful arts of self reliance that goes hand in hand with food storage and emergency preparedness.  Not only is it an inexpensive way to get A LOT of food that you can preserve, but it is also a valuable survival skill should a longer term emergency arise.  You can store seeds and if something happens to the food supply you'll be able to grow a large-scale garden if necessary.

Whether you have a small space or a large space, square foot gardening can be a great option.  Instead of gardening in traditional rows you build raised garden beds and plant in squares.  My cousin and I filmed a little introduction to Square Foot Gardening video about 7 years ago (you can tell the age by our super stylish clothes) but it is still great info if you are looking to get started!

Here are some other helpful posts if you are ready to get a garden going this spring.  It's a little bit late to plant some cooler season crops but you definitely still have time to get most of your staples crops into the ground if you just buy starter plants from a nursery.

If you follow our Facebook Group you may have seen me post several "accountability posts" lately.  I do this to encourage me to avoid procrastinating and actually DO the task I want to do.  Yesterday I posted that I needed to plant the tomato plants I bought (3-pack for $6.99 at Costco woot woot), but I have a huge garden box full of weeds that I need to attack first. 

So yesterday and today I have been working on that project. If I don't finish it, all of our group members will know I didn't do it so it's great motivation for me to actually accomplish something.
